Etienne Fourie

Substation Sunset
Engineer in Training - Act. Reliability Engineer - Anglo Platinum
In my recent role at Anglo Platinum, I was employed as a Medium Voltage Electrician since 2016 to 2022. We have a total installed electrical capacity of +- 150MVA, of which we are responsible for 9 x 33kV/11kV substations, 4 x 2.8MW GE Emergency Diesel Generators and over 96km of overhead lines (33kV and 11kV) stretching across the Mine.

In my current role as Act. Reliability Engineer, I am responsible for all Engineering failure analysis, defect elimination and condition monitoring on surface and underground for most of our critical assets. Together with our Section Engineers and First Line Supervisors, we look at all aspects of a failure to prevent failures from happening again.

Previous Professional Work Experience

After passing my Electrical Trade Test in 2008, I was fortunate to start working as an Electrician at Anglo Kumba Iron Ore Thabazimbi in the Power and Water Distribution section. Some of my responsibilities started with maintenance of the mine's Primary and Secondary Crushers and conveyors, boreholes and water distribution dams and whilst learning the distribution network, started with maintenance on the 11kV distribution lines as well. During this time, I had the privilege to assist in a 3.3kV Drill Rig re-built project. As my experience grew, I was asked to start relieving as Shift Supervisor for various shifts.I saw an opportunity at the 6.6kV P&H Shovel Section, as the availability of the shovels were very low at that time, and asked if I could be transferred to that section. The biggest contributor to unavailability of the shovels was due to trailing cable faults. After research on TDR (Time Domain Reflectomatry), I found a solution to identify and locate the cable faults quicker, and brought the availability up from 30% to 70% in 3 months. I was very humbled to receive a Certificate in the Achiever Category as Best Artisan in Mining 2014. After the closure of Thabazimbi mine at the end of 2015, I was transferred to Shishen Iron Ore in the Northern Cape and started working on the Liebherr 996 Shovels. At the beginning of 2016, I was fortunate to start working at Anglo Platinum Amandelbult.
